<p>Study author Dr. Andrea Kriska tells media these findings ore a reminder that the key to warding off diabetes may not lie in the hands of doctors and public health officials, but with each person who wants to stay healthy.</p>
<p>People can do something about the risk of diabetes, she says in a press release. That would be to eat more wisely and get more active.”</p>

<p>Kriska and. her colleagues obtained their findings by following 1 ,728 individuals for on overage of six years, asking them how much they exercised and noting who developed type 2 diabetes.</p>
<p>In the study, exercise included any recreational or work- related activity in which people expended more energy than they did during so-called activities of daily living, which include bathing, grooming and eating.</p>
<p>The researchers focused on the type 2 form of diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, which is strongly associated with lifestyle factors like obesity and exercise. As they report in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the team found that the more activity people got, the less they appeared to be at risk of diabetes.</p>
<p>This relationship persisted regardless of how much people weighed, and exercise reduced the risk of diabetes among even the heaviest people.<br />
